Mesilla Plaza

The National Historic Landmark square at the heart of town, ringed by Territorial-style buildings.

Mesilla Plaza and a number of the buildings around it form a National Historic Landmark District, declared in 1961. A flag-raising on November 18, 1854 confirmed United States sovereignty here after the Gadsden Purchase.

The Basilica of San Albino faces the plaza, and among the Territorial buildings on its east and west sides is the original Butterfield stage ticket office and waiting room.
