The Mexican government ordered the first church built in 1852 for the town’s refugee settlers, and it was dedicated to Saint Albinus of Angers, a Breton saint born in Vannes in 469. (Wikipedia)
The church has the distinction of having been established in Mexico and now standing in the United States because of the Gadsden Purchase. Bishop Jean Baptiste Lamy of Santa Fe, a Frenchman, oversaw the church after 1854. (Wikipedia)
The present brick building has leaded stained-glass windows of saints and belfries at its corners. Daily Masses are held in both Spanish and English. (Wikipedia)
The Holy See granted the church minor basilica status in 2008. (Wikipedia)
